Robert Ferguson Selfridge

Robert Ferguson Selfridge, [1833-1916] son of Isaac Selfridge and Mary McEachron
of Argyle. Was raised in the Caledonia, NY area and m.Jennie McCandlish, of Canada.
Moved to Romeo, Michigan and ran a blacksmith shop with his brother.
Enlisted Michigan 22nd Infantry regiment, rose through the ranks and eventually
was discharged as a full Lieutenant. Moved to San Francisco with other relatives,
set up shop as a blacksmith again and lived the genteel life. A son and daughter
died 8 years before his death in 1916. In his later years, he wrote a booklet
"Introduction of the Selfridge Family in America" which tells more about his travels
to the midwest, largely about his military adventures in the Civil War and a little
history of the origin of the New England/New York State Selfridges. He was quite
proud of the fact that at his age, he and his wife had driven from California to Florida, then
to NY State to visit his cousins and on to Michigan and other stopoffs before returning
to California. Buried in GAR Cemetery, San Jose, CA.
